Most people consult an astrologer after the marriage has ended — sometimes years after, when the pattern has repeated enough times to become undeniable. What they rarely think to do is look at the chart before the wedding, when the information is still useful.

The chart does not predict divorce with certainty. The 7th House ruler in the 12th House is one of the most consistent divorce indicators in any chart. The house governing partnership is ruled from the house of hidden things, of self-undoing, and of what operates beneath conscious awareness. What this produces is the experience of committed relationship as something that retreats into concealment or dissolves — sometimes through the partner’s actual imprisonment, illness, or exile; sometimes through the more ordinary dissolution of what was built together. The tradition notes this position sometimes indicates a legal but secret marriage, or a partner who becomes isolated.

The Descendant in Capricorn afflicted by Saturn in hard aspect describes the partner who arrives as a despot and hypocrite — the functional marriage that brings neither party genuine warmth. Separation or widowhood is a consistent indicator for this configuration.

The Descendant in Aquarius afflicted describes an unreliable partner, the “free” marriage, indefinite relationships — the specific quality of commitment that does not quite commit, of a union that both parties understand differently.

Uranus in the 7th House: the marriage that ends suddenly

Uranus in the 7th House is the divorce planet par excellence. The description is precise: these people often enter marriage without much deliberation, driven by an internal impulse, or the marriage is concluded under compulsion, quickly, unexpectedly. Uranus keeps them in a state of anxiety, anticipation of changes, tension due to possible exposures, scandals, and crises.

Pluto conjunct the Descendant is one of the indicators for multiple marriages — and for the specific quality of partnership that is transformative in both directions, building and destroying in equal measure.

The Descendant by sign: your partner’s shadow

The sign on the Descendant describes the quality of partner the person consistently attracts — and importantly, under affliction, what that partner’s shadow looks like.

Aries Descendant afflicted: the partner is impulsive, aggressive, prone to all kinds of conflicts. Rupture of the relationship. Divorce.

Gemini Descendant afflicted: a frivolous, irresponsible partner with a weak sense of duty. A rolling stone.

What the chart shows that pre-marital counseling does not

In my experience, the most useful pre-marital chart work is not predicting whether a specific marriage will end in divorce. It is identifying the specific relational patterns that will generate the most friction — and whether those patterns, clearly named and understood, are ones the two people can consciously work with.

The person with Uranus in the 7th who knows their constitutional orientation toward freedom and sudden change in relationship can structure a partnership differently than someone who discovers this pattern after three marriages.
